Tropical storm LaLa is heading our way, Hawaii, don’t wait until the last minute to make ice to help keep your food cool.

With a potential storm on the way, don’t wait until the last minute to make ice!

A few easy tips:

-Turn your fridge and freezer temps down a few degrees.
-Fill reusable containers or zip-top bags with ice.
-Freeze bottles of water (leave room for expansion).
-Fill empty space in your freezer to help it stay colder longer.
-Keep a cooler ready in case you need to save food or medications.

Your refrigerator is one of the hardest-working appliances during an outage. The colder you can keep it, the better.

Bonus tip (especially if you’re traveling):
Freeze a cup of water and place a penny on top before you leave.

When you come back:

  • If the penny is still on top, power likely stayed on.
  • If the ice melted and refroze with the penny sunk lower, that’s a sign the power went out while you were gone.

That means your food may not be safe anymore, even if everything looks fine.

A little planning today can save a lot of food tomorrow.
